Tesco starts a “closed loop” program for packaging

Tesco, in collaboration with leading packaging manufacturer Faerch, has launched the new “Tray 2 Tray” programme, it involves the recovery and recycling of plastic trays used to package food.
For the first time in this industry, a closed-loop recycling process is addressed, creating a new circular packaging solution for the range of chilled ready meals.
PET trays will be recovered through the kerbside waste, recycled and converted back into new trays for food use.
Tesco’s ready meal trays already contain up to 75% recycled PET, predominantly from cleaner and easier to recycle bottle flake. Through the new programme, a minimum of 30% recycled content will instead come from old trays.
The collaboration will ensure that high quality food-grade PET is kept within the supply chain, and demonstrates that PET packaging from trays can be fully recovered and recycled at an industrial scale.
