Volkswagen: imitation leather made from coffee waste being tested

Volkswagen Group Innovation is focused on the research and development of new circular materials to be applied to car interiors. An alternative imitation leather to that traditionally made exclusively of plastic material is being tested, with the aim of integrating a percentage of an organic component.

Since imitation leather is a multilayer consisting of a base fabric, a filler material and a leather-effect surface, the Volkswagen Group is working on the possibility of using coffee processing waste as a filler.
Specifically, this is a by-product consisting of the film that is removed from coffee beans during the roasting process, commonly known as silverskin.
Tests carried out show that the durability of the new circular solution is comparable to that of the imitation leather already experimented on the market.
