Flax fibers used in the construction of a pedestrian bridge

A 15-metre pedestrian bridge made from flax fibre in combination with bioresin blocks and polyurethane foam. A lightweight and stable composite material, which is monitored with the help of sensors placed inside the infrastructure to check resistance and ageing according to weather conditions, humidity and load.
The Smart Circular Bridge project was developed by the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the University of Stuttgart in cooperation with other European universities and partners to test the use of flax in construction, a fast-growing and readily available bio-based material.
