Recycled steering wheels for Porsche

The pilot project for recycling mixed waste from end-of-life vehicles, carried out by Porsche AG and BASF SE in collaboration with BEST Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH, has just been completed.
The project aimed to investigate the recyclability and possible new applications of high-performance plastics contained in automotive shredder residue, a mixture comprising foams, plastics, films and paint particles.
The experiment used a chemical recycling process called gasification, using raw materials of biological origin, such as wood chips, as well as automotive waste, to obtain a new polyurethane formulation.
Porsche, applying circular economy strategies in the production of its vehicles, has set itself the goal of increasing the percentage of recycled materials and has used the new formulation to manufacture new steering wheels.
