Nike Refurbished: circular economy strategies applied to the world of shoes

Nike recently introduced the Nike Refurbished service, aimed at repairing and refurbishing footwear to extend their useful life.
The well-known sports brand has integrated its circular economy strategy, going to consolidate its “Move to Zero” mission in sustainability.
The goal is to promote a new business model that considers reuse and repair as primary, in order to keep valuable resources away from landfills.
At the moment this model is applied to shoes returned by customers, which are classified according to their condition, if necessary repaired or reconditioned, cleaned, sanitized and then resold to the public at a reduced price.
There are mainly three conditions in which returned shoes are classified:
– Like new, in near perfect condition with no signs of wear;
– Gently worn, shoes in very good condition characterized by slight visible wear;
– Cosmetically flawed, such as stains, marks, faded colors.
Returns that do not fall within this classification will be sent for recycling for the creation of new circular materials by Nike.
The service is currently active in some stores in the United States.
