Corona: circular packaging obtained by using barley scraps

AB InBev, the parent company of the Corona brand, is launching a new circular packaging solution for the six-pack.
After about three years of R&D, a technology has been devised to recycle barley straw, waste resulting from the harvesting of the main ingredient for beer production. The straw waste is converted into fiber and then combined with recycled wood fibers to obtain a secondary packaging made of strong cardboard that does not contain virgin raw materials.
The process of converting straw to paper fiber features the efficient use of energy and water resources, using up to 90% less water than traditional virgin wood treatment.
The end-of-life packaging is 100% recyclable on par with traditional cardboard packaging.
The company for the moment has launched circular packaging as a pilot project in Colombia and Argentina, the goal is to make the technology scalable to extend it to all countries and in the long term, also involve the other beer brands it owns, to improve its material capital and try to stimulate and positively influence the entire supply chain.
