Renault Group’s Re-Factory project

Renault Group’s Re-Factory project

Renault Group has developed a sustainable development strategy that aims to reduce its carbon footprint. The strategy covers the entire lifecycle of vehicles, considering materials and components purchased, production sites, road emissions and finally the potential second life or recycling.
Regarding the end-of-life phase of its vehicles, it has set up the Re-Factory project, the first European site dedicated to the circular economy of mobility, located in Flins, France, and later extended to Spain.
Through this initiative, the Renault Group is implementing a new industrial model that focuses on preserving resources and achieving the goal of more sustainable mobility.
The aim is to repair to extend the life of vehicles, reuse components, ensure the recycling of raw materials, use second-life batteries for new uses, develop new energies and stimulate research into the circular economy for the creation of economic as well as environmental and social value.
A new approach to the second-hand market managed directly by the manufacturer.
The collected parts that cannot be reused are directed to specialised recyclers, who extract the material and then use it again directly at the Group’s industrial sites.
Three main materials are currently recycled
– polypropylene, particularly in shielding
– copper, reused in foundry operations
– precious metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium) contained in catalysts.
